Re: WTS: 5.7x28FN package

SPF I was astonished that I had ZERO response on these from this site, when I was essentially giving away 875pcs of properly cleaned and prepped brass for free when considering the price of the "out of stock/no back order" bullets. This speaks to two issues. First, the REAL economy sucks and nobody ...

Re: Hornady Teflon Spray

I want to re-emphasize the following lest readers misunderstand:

Teflon spray lube is NOT an adequate substitute for resizing lube or factory lacquer/ polymer case coating!

It does not appear to harm either factory firearm or case finishes.

Use at ones discretion.

Re: Ruger57 magazines

I believe many mistake the "Cosmoline like" preservative on new slides for rust. It is exactly the same color. I even made the same assumption until I figured out what it was.

Redding applies a very similar substance to all of it's dies.

For all I know, it might actually be Cosmoline.

Ruger57 magazines

Two issues: 1) Mags are coated with the same preservative gunk that is inside the chamber/barrel. No one seems to have any issues with feeding, but I thoroughly cleaned mine inside and out (including spring and follower) with CLP. 2) When reassembling after (1), note that the spring is asymmetrical....

Re: New gun chamber cleaning

No, but I did discover another issue that might contribute to this problem. When reassembling the magazine I noticed the spring can go in two ways, but only one is correct. The spring bottom tab is canted. If you insert without compressing, you will notice the plate attached to the spring bottom wil...

Re: New gun chamber cleaning

Just found this also applies to magazines. While loading/unloading, I felt the follower sticking. Not badly, but just enough for me to investigate. Disassembled the mag and gave the inside and spring a thorough scrubbing with CLP. Same result as with chamber, a rag full of brown preservative gunk. W...

Re: Magnum Primers

Delayed ejection for sure, that's inherent in the design.

As far as the pressure curve, until someone presents a graph from actual transducer data, everything is conjecture.

I still have both hands too, probably because I still don't have dies. : )

Re: Magnum Primers

That is what the available graphs show. It really doesn't matter what happens as far as powder "movement" (if such a thing exists). For the purposes of internal ballistics of small arms ammunition, existing data shows the two events are essentially simultaneous. If this were not the case, Redding, W...

Re: Magnum Primers

The idea of an INDEPENDENT pressure wave due solely to primer ignition makes an interesting theory, for which I can find no factual evidence. Out of curiosity, I did an internet search for "Pistol chamber pressure curve" (also Rifle, with identical results). I found dozens of graphs with every imagi...

Re: Magnum Primers

Thank you Jay. Those are the details I was looking for. I appreciate the explanation, as always. While you are correct about the lack of SAAMI specs for this cartridge, there are C.I.P established specs. My point was that there are generally accepted pressure limits. The name of the authority is a n...

What is the negative of a quicker pressure curve, as long as peak is within SAAMI?

Has anyone tried using SRMPs? May sound crazy, but maybe not. The only SRMP that is noticeably "hotter" (greater brisance) is Rem 7 1/2. I wouldn't even think about using those. CCI 450s have a thicker cup (+.0005in) than CCI 400s and might be worth trying, since 5.7x28 is notoriously hard on primer...

Acceptable Shoulder Movement

I'm new to this forum, so forgive me if this has already been discussed.

I assume that some shoulder movement is normal in the 5.7x28. What is considered acceptable shoulder movement in the FiveSeven and Ruger 57 pistols, considering reasonable brass life (at least 4 re-loads)?

Re: Reloading for PS90

Thanks for posting the pictures. This confirms my suspicion about the cause of case stretching. When FNH designed this cartridge, reliability was obviously a primary concern. I feel confident that brass preservation for reloading was not. In fact. I suspect FN's lawyers would be happy if it were not...

I have seen these photos before, but didn't pay attention to the case head, as the topic was about the shoulder. I am astonished at the amount of material in the heads of these, it is MASSIVE compared to Lapua 6BR/220Russian, which I have reloaded well over 100times each. Of course it's not just abo...

Re: Unsupported case head

I bought two different lots. One had staked/sealed primers. I assume that is FN loaded. The others were not (about 500 of each). It didn't matter which, the shoulder bump was random in each group. The staked primers were more flattened. I suspect the differences at shoulder were more a result of whi...

Unsupported case head

The rear of the Ruger 57 chamber is cone shaped to facilitate feeding, but leaves about 1/16in of the case head unsupported around the entire case circumference. Apparently, the FN has a similar geometry. I was concerned about stress on the case head until I found the following in a post on the "oth...

I plan to use carb cleaner for routine maintenance (re: lacquer removal).

I can see where this virgin chamber gunk could have a higher coefficient of friction than bare chamber wall. It is very thick and sticky.

New gun chamber cleaning

Just polished my new Ruger 57 chamber. Removed a lot of brown gunk, which is probably either a preservative (Cosmoline?) or residue from the surface treatment. I have seen this same stuff on new Savage blued firearms, and think it may be related to Melaniting. Break Free CLP alone will not remove al...

I would recommend not wasting money on Holosun. It is typical Chinese garbage. Horrible, unreliable mechanicals and glass made from old Coke bottles. I ordered a RCBS #29 shell holder (.25 ACP) because supplier listed it as being interchangeable with 5.7x28FN. It is NOT! Too small, had to force 5.7 brass in and had a heck of a time getting it out. Be sure to order items that are 5.7 specific (RCBS #45). Beware of any supplier that lists component...

Just got a can of Hornady Gun Cleaner and Spray Lube (black can). The stuff is a mess. The "cleaner" part dissolves EVERYTHING, including the bluing on my brand new Ruger 57 magazines! While researching this subject, I happened upon an old thread from "The High Road". Apparently, I'm not the first to ask this question. I paraphrase for brevity: "Teflon is a polymer. Using Teflon (on finished rounds AFTER resizing) on the 5.7x28 would certainly make sense. It's low coefficient of f...

Hornady Teflon Spray

Many are familiar with Hornady One Shot Lube in the RED can. Available search information indicates that it contains silicon, and from my experience (Don't even get me started) it never dries completely and leaves a tacky feel that I suspect attracts dirt and powder residue. I could never get it com...
