Speer 33gr Jacketed HP #1014

Anyone ever use these bullets? They are in a great weight range that I'd really like to make work, the problem is I cannot get them to load. I've loaded many other FB bullets into 5.7 with no problems, but these just will not go in straight, so they either smash the case or stick out sideways. I've had one success of like 10 tries. I'm not aware of any way to flare the case on the 5.7 to seat these easier, maybe that is a solution? If not, I guess they are going back and to be avoided. I'd had the exact opposite problem with Speer 55gr in my .223/5.56, the bullets would slide right through the neck of most of my resized brass only worked with 2 out of 15 different headstamps when using a Dillon die, while every other bullet I tried was perfectly snug with great tension in every type of brass headstamp I have.

Unfortunately, my calipers are not precise enough to determine specifically how much wider the bullet is for these Speer 33gr 1014 vs. the Nosler 40gr Varmageddon which is also FB but which seats great into all my 5.7 brass.

I just ran a brief ladder with them, had two crush the way you're talking, but got 20 in nicely. The trick I was using was to place them on the case mouth, then give them a little tappy. Tap, tap, taparoo. I'd give them about three taps on the seating stem, drop the ram to make sure they were starting straight, then just press em in. Sounds like it would take forever, but once you get the feel, it's a non issue.

thanks, when you say 3 taps with the seating stem, what exactly do you mean, I'm having a hard time picturing how you tap with the seating stem unless you are talking about unscrewing it and using it as some kind of hammer, but I doubt that. please explain as you seem to have figured out how to seat these little buggers.

btw: how was the accuracy? are they even worth bothering?

Set them on the case mouth, guide them up into your die, and instead of just using the ram handle to seat them in one stroke like normal, just use the handle to sort of bump them lightly against the seating stem a couple times, lower the ram to visually check alignment, and if they've started well, then you can just run the ram all the way up like normal until you have your desired COAL.

I didn't check them for accuracy, other than to make sure they hit paper and don't keyhole

Has anyone tried these bullets with Unique powder.

Old thread but if someone is having problems with any bullet loading I find that if you properly chamfer the case mouth it solves it! If you still have problems you can roll your bullets on a sizing pad with a TINY bit of One Shot paste.
