Any S&W M&P 5.7 Reloaders Out There?
I suspect that it's probably a little early for any new S&W M&P 5.7 owners to have started reloading for them but you never know.
I'm wondering if they will need the coated / lubed cases as well.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for a great forum.

Welcome to the club.
YES the coating is needed for the cartridge to function.

What I'm wondering is if they gas blowback system reduces case stretch. That could be significant improvement for reloaders.

Well neck movement is part of the function of the cartridge. We will see.

Re: Any S&W M&P 5.7 Reloaders Out There?
I know its a older topic, but i can answer a few things as i do have a m&p 5.7 and have reloaded for it!
As far as i can tell, once fired, reloaded brass seems to cycle without issue in my example. However, i would say the coating probably is even more important because the slide doesnt move until the bullet has left the chamber. This reduces recoil, but i imagine it also reduces chamber pressure during ejection significantly, compared to a ruger which is direct blowback (in my opinion).
As for case/neck stretch, i can confirm no significant difference between ruger and s&w. Which makes sense, since the cartridge is still producing up to 50k psi...
Ive also noticed my particular m&p isnt too picky over reloads. Shorter hp bullets (like the 45g hornady hp/bee) feed just fine. I also run the brass thru the die only once, like any other case, and have not had feed or function issues.
EDIT: and yes i know the brass is shrinking during that delayed blowback, but if the coating was gone, i dont think itd be as reliable. The brass is still stinkin hot once it leaves the gun afterall

Usually coating it's not needed in gas operated guns

Re: Any S&W M&P 5.7 Reloaders Out There?
Maybe once i fire some factory stuff, ill take 5 or 6 cases and run em thru the tumbler and knock off the coating, then see how the s&w does with it..
I still dont like it tho, just got a feeling it'd reduce brass lifespan and increase the odds of neck and/or shoulder seperation. That, and a hot soapy wash in a rotary tumbler (or just in a bowl) doesnt really hurt the coating and still has the same wash n dry times so... Idk.
EDIT: guess i oughta mention that im also not too picky about brass appearances with reloads either. Pretty much, most my reloads are range loads, and as long as the brass is smooth, in spec, and has no damage (split necks, rim cracks, etc), i have no issue if theres tarnish on the brass, or if the inside of the case and primer pocket are a bit dirty. As long as both the bullet and primer seat without issue, im happy, not like im shooting 100+ yards with a handgun.. That, and i dont really expect more than 3-5 reloads out of a single case in 5.7. now 45 colt, where i do expect 10+ reloads out of a single case, i tend to try n keep the fouling in the brass in check.
That said, if i do reload for self defense, hunting, or long range, i try to use virgin or the best brass i can, for reliability sake. But, in the first 2 examples, i also lean towards factory options, if reasonably available.
That said, rant over, tl;dr here is
Next time i fire off factory loads (prob next month), ill strip the coating off and load em with my 45g bee loads to function test. And report back.
Also still feel the coating is very important to the cartridge.

The coating is fundamental to the operation of the round. This is a fact.

We shall see when I get some rounds downrange.

Interested to see your results. I've seen others tumble the coating off and claim successful operation of a PSA Rock, FiveseveN, and/or PS90 with the rounds, but they're usually small sample sizes of 5-10rds.

And that was the case for FsN's also. Small batches work. Most often there is a build up of coating on the chamber. The reloads work until that coating wears out and then case separations occur. Worst is when you have a neck separation and you don't catch it. You stand a good chance of shooting the next round through that piece of neck and have an over pressure issue.

Thats really my biggest concern, and im not THAT hard up on cash to try n push my brass..panzermk2 wrote: ↑07 Apr 2023, 09:04And that was the case for FsN's also. Small batches work. That said, i think personally a coating removal would probably just cause failure to cycle n eject in the m&p. The gas system lets chamber pressures drop and the recoil spring is quite soft, a stuck case neck would probably just stay stuck rather than rip off i bet... Tho its not something id wanna try xD
What i can say though is 1x fired brass with damaged coatings (i blame myself there, the seating die scraped some off along with the magazine feed lips) did not stick. I fired 22 rounds of factory blue tips, and have been shooting reloads since, and have not noticed any issues thus far. I also plan on discarding the cases after 5 reloads irregardless of condition, due to coating breakdown, brass fatigue, etc. But, strictly speaking on range ammo here, by the time i discard the brass, ive shot it 5x for about 2.25$, or an average of 45 cents per shot, which is good by me..

Re: Any S&W M&P 5.7 Reloaders Out There?
I get 4 firings off my brass before discarding. Once as new FN or AE ammo, and then three handload cycles. Once it's 3x fired, it gets used in the Rock and left on the ground. My plan is to basically use new, 1x, and 2x brass in the PS90 with a brass catcher and then only use 3x fired/discard brass in the pistol since it slings them quite a ways and those little cases are tough to find in the grass. I'd rather not have 1x and 2x fired brass getting lost if possible.

If you take care of your coating and keep your loads at plinker levels x5 is a good target. Besides the coating and shoulder the primer pocket will give out. Even low loads the 4.7 is hell on primers. DON'T fully swage the primer pockets and even if there is a crimp just kiss is enough to get rid of the crimp.

Good to know, i havent had to do anything to the pockets yet (remington 7.5s go in nice n smooth), but i will add that to my reloading notes for surepanzermk2 wrote: ↑10 Apr 2023, 06:51If you take care of your coating and keep your loads at plinker levels x5 is a good target. Re: Any S&W M&P 5.7 Reloaders Out There?
I just picked up a S&W 5.7 but have not had a chance to fire it yet. I am impressed with the design of the gas operation. Field stripping is not much different than most locked breech tilting barrel designs. Of course, how well it functions remains to be seen.
I am not 100% sure yet, but I do believe that the design will not allow a round to be fully chambered and fired if there has been a case neck separation.

Re: Any S&W M&P 5.7 Reloaders Out There?
Howdy! I shot my S&W 5.7 side by side against my Ruger 57 and didn't notice much difference with case stretch or forward movement of the shoulder. I've shot a few hundred rounds through my S&W with no malfunctions with any of my reloads or factory ammunition. The only malfunction was with the operator, ME as once I didn't get the mag fully inserted and after the first shot the pistol went click for the second shot, looked and saw the mag had slipped down. MY bad.
Re: Any S&W M&P 5.7 Reloaders Out There?
That's a pretty significant difference. If it holds true as a general rule, it would make the S&W nicer for reloaders.
Thanks for the pic.

Have you seen my detailed explanation of the S&W and how it's gas boosting system works? There is way to much to retype here to explain the reduced shoulder movement. Just watch my vid.
