Primed 5.7 brass at American Reloading

Post by towerofpower93 » 03 Jun 2023, 08:16

I’ve never seen primed 5.7 brass for sale before. Anyone ever purchased and loaded using this?

The site says that it's "demilitarized." Unfired new cartridges. The bullets were pulled and the powder dumped.

It's American Eagle cases.

From time to time you see de-milled 5.7 brass. I had a contract years ago for a one time deal.

Also on the east coast there was a company that de-milled SS-192.

You come across de-milled 5.7 at about the same percentage as you do other military rounds.

Notice I said percentage NOT amounts. 5.7 is not as common as other rounds so you don't see it as often but it does happen and it is out there from time to time.

Brass arrived and some fit the EA gauge, but many have necks that have been expanded via the pulling process.

Easiest way to solve this is just pull the decapping pin and run them through the sizing die with a light coat of lube before dry tumbling the lube off? That’s how I load primed .380 brass, but wanted to ensure the bottle neck wouldn’t cause an issue doing it with 5.7.

That's my plan.. Wish they had a neck sizing die.

A very SMALL amount of lube by Q tip to the shoulder forming section of the die every 30 rounds or so.

Thought about that after I typed it. Getting media in the flash hole, or a clump of media in the case body, could lead to a bad day.

I'll either do the "every X cases directly apply lube to the shoulder" thing you mentioned in your other post, or just leave them lubed until after I've loaded them up and then dry tumble for a few minutes to remove the lube. Also thinking I'll use OneShot instead of my homemade lanolin/99% iso alcohol solution as the OS will come off easier and I'm not reseizing the entire case. I use OS on straight walled pistol brass to save my elbow when doing 300-500rd runs on my 650 and the lanolin on bottle necked cases when full length resizing.

That make sense to you, Jay, or is tumbling primed brass (even if fully loaded) something you just don't do?

If so, I'd like to hear your reasoning. I've tumbled thousands of rounds of 9mm and 45ACP after they've been loaded to remove the lube and I know many who do the same with no stories of primers being set off.

I like 25% Lanolin to 75% 90% isopropyl.

Not a fan of tumbling loaded ammo either. It has more to do with bullet setback and if you do it long enough you will break down the powder grains and change the burn rate of the powder. In the 5.7 when you are already dealing much higher pressures then 9mm or 45acp you could get into trouble.

Did you run them in with the die set to fully resize the case, or did you raise it up a bit to leave the shoulder and body alone?

I don't need to reload any 5.7 at the moment, so I haven't messed with any of these cases, but it'll be good info to have for when I eventually get to them.

I just went ahead for a full resize as some cases did not drop into my case gauge. :D

Cool. Going to do a run of 10mm on my 650 and then swap it over to 5.7 with the decapping rod removed to get these cases resized.
