I'd want a basement with grow lights if I was going to lock down and stay in one place. I'm sure that if you could grow enough food and had an air+water recycling and filtration system along with some sort of power generation the only problem would be staying amused in there till the zombies died.

While the house would be excellent when I wanted a break, there is no way I wouldn't go outside and have me some fun with the zombies :guns: I haven't trained, practiced and learned for nothing :p

Zombies may eventually decay to the point where they are no longer a threat, I guess that would qualify as death maybe?

Grow lights in basement? Why? When z-day hits, do you honestly think anyone is going to care what or how much of it you are growing? Grow on the roof, use natural light & rain water.

Who cares if they can crawl? They are slower & easier targets that way. Jumping from nearby trees may be a problem depending on the type of zombies so be sure you rig the the trees with explosives before z-day hits.

As for flying zombies, SAM sites

I don't live in an uber cool concrete bunker with a drawbridge, but my house is pretty zombie proof.

I live in a former big city Firehouse. The building is of all cinder block construction. There are no windows on the ground level. There is no rear or side entry.

The front entry consists of a commercial steel entry door with dual keyed deadbolts and 2 manual 1/2" commercial slide bolts.

The auto garage door is a commercial heavy duty steel shutter type deal, a lot like the roll down door on the zombie fortress on the last page.

Run of the mill mindless zombies wont get in here. My only worry is human thieves. lol...

How much concrete do you need to keep out WMD-level-radiation?

If you wanted to keep out radiation, you would need a concrete home with about 3 feet of earth covering. That would make it a 'bomb shelter' by most government standards.
You would also need some kind of fresh air intake with HEPA particulate filters and a water well that you could hand pump and a gravity powered reverse osmosis system with iodine.
But honestly, if it came to THAT...what would be left to come OUT to?
Could you store enough to outlast what happened outside?

CDC Warns Public to Prepare for 'Zombie Apocalypse'
By Joshua Rhett Miller

Published May 18, 2011 | FoxNews.com

Are you prepared for the impending zombie invasion?

That's the question posed by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention in a Monday blog posting gruesomely titled, "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse." And while it's no joke, CDC officials say it's all about emergency preparation.

"There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for," the posting reads. "Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That's right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you'll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you'll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency."

The post, written by Assistant Surgeon General Ali Khan, instructs readers how to prepare for "flesh-eating zombies" much like how they appeared in Hollywood hits like "Night of the Living Dead" and video games like Resident Evil. Perhaps surprisingly, the same steps you'd take in preparation for an onslaught of ravenous monsters are similar to those suggested in advance of a hurricane or pandemic.

"First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house," the posting continues. "This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored)."

Other items to be stashed in such a kit include medications, duct tape, a battery-powered radio, clothes, copies of important documents and first aid supplies.

"Once you've made your emergency kit, you should sit down with your family and come up with an emergency plan," the posting continues. "This includes where you would go and who you would call if zombies started appearing outside your doorstep. You can also implement this plan if there is a flood, earthquake or other emergency."

The idea behind the campaign stemmed from concerns of radiation fears following the earthquake and tsunami that rocked Japan in March. CDC spokesman Dave Daigle told FoxNews.com that someone had asked CDC officials if zombies would be a concern due to radiation fears in Japan and traffic spiked following that mention.

"It's kind of a tongue-in-cheek campaign," Daigle said Wednesday. "We were talking about hurricane preparedness and someone bemoaned that we kept putting out the same messages."

While metrics for the post are not yet available, Daigle said it has become the most popular CDC blog entry in just two days.

"People are so tuned into zombies," he said. "People are really dialed in on zombies. The idea is we're reaching an audience or a segment we'd never reach with typical messages."

Editor's Note: The link to the posting at CDC.gov was not working as of Wednesday evening. Please check back for updates.

Good play by the CDC. This is a humorous topic that really covers all emergency events, and by addressing it, they throw in some humor while educating, instead of being formal and dry about a specific type of emergency.

Extra level under garage ≠ bunker. Although it is a cool idea, its not really meant for withstanding zombie-day or TEOTWAWKI.
Most of his posts are deleted - didn't get an answer for some questions I had :( Looks like it was a security issue, too many questions about where & what & security systems... Guy was smart to delete at least some of his posts & rethink some of his pics.

My questions are; what about water seepage and what the hell were the windows for? Its under ground!

Guy couldn't have been hurting for money, build cost him over $260K - and he bought a Ferrari while he apparently already had a Vette & Porche...

Just a tip, the knife is affective as a bayonet only if it protrudes out longer than the barrel.

Other than that, I love the kit.

That's impressive, putting all that in one weapon. I didn't see anything about weight though, I wonder how heavy all that is total :ponder:

Unless it is used for slicing, it is pretty worthless.

Addendum: Many have asked about the weight of the gun and where you can get the modifications mentioned. Before the modifications, the gun weighed 7.5 pounds, after the modifications it weighs 9.5 lbs. For a list of where you can get the supplies

Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket!

A frind of mine has a nice setup on a full lengrh AR, a fire starting kit and some spare parts in the stock, like springs, firing pin, hammer, a few tools, and a couple extra tools in the pistol grip. And a little cleaning kit. His philosophy being that you should keep stuff in the gun meant to keep the gun firing.

As long as it wasn't airborne or transmittable by insects, strictly human to human, a single source outbreak should be contained relatively easily. So as long we still have the right bear arms (and given the panicky state of people), do y'all really think there's a chance something like this could spread nation/world wide? (Well, except for Madagascar  )

Then again - almost no law abiding citizens in NYC, Chicago, Washington DC could defend themselves against hordes of the living impaired (not to be confused with the thinking impaired). I suppose it would be possible they'd spread out a bit from there but I still think the gun nuts would save the day; but only after the uglies cleared out a majority of the liberals of course

So what would be the most plausible scenario for a wide spread epidemic of this sort but still strictly human-to-human?

When you say human to human but not airborne do you mean something along the lines of body fluid contact only? Or does short range airborne like a sneeze count? Something to consider too is how long symptoms take to manifest, and how good doctors are at diagnosing it. If it's transferred by a sneeze and the brain eating doesn't kick in for a month, that's a month you'd think you have allergies and be infecting others. I was going to use AIDS as an example for the rate of spreading if it was fluids only but zombies biting people would go a lot quicker than zombies humping people. /end ramble

*goes to play more Pandemic 2...damned Madagascar*

Bodily fluids only - biting, open wounds exposed to zombie saliva/blood, that sort of thing.

Yes, a long(er) incubation period would aid in the spread but everything I have seen so far indicates conversion to living impaired within 24hrs, usually faster. :?:

Then I'd say major population centers are screwed but the zombies would be noticed before they could overrun the outlying areas. And the only way it could make it across the country is if say a flight took off from LA to Seattle, and someone turned zombie midair, and got off the plane. It'd be even more difficult though because I don't know how many non-stop flights there are from coast to coast.

I've always been a fan of the "pot pouri" Mk19 grenade launcher ammo boxes... a little bit of everything. HE, AP, FRAG, TRACER, repeat. Just having a picture of a zombie on the box would sell it like hotcakes.
