First attempt at 5.7x28. Need advice.

Post by Carter » 10 Feb 2023, 16:19

:? Folks, I have reloaded many calibers for many years. Today I tried to set up dies for the 5.7 and quickly stuck my first case...ever! Arrrrgh! I know how to get it out. My concern is getting a "horse shoe" impression on the base of most cases I resize. Any solution for this? Thanks in advance.

This can sometimes happen if the spindle / decapping rod is set too low. You might also wanna try cleaning or lightly polishing the inside of the die.

What dies are you using?

What dies are you using? What case lube?

I'm using the RCBS small base die set. I've tried three lubes so far. First was Lee paste. Second my lanolin mix, but I think the alcohol destroyed the case coating. Last, which seemed best, was Imperial wax.

I use homemade lanolin and isopropyl alcohol at a 1:10-1:12 ratio and have never stuck a 5.7 case in either a Lee die or an AZ Born resize/trim die. Also never seen it remove the factory coating.

How did you clean your brass prior to sizing? What’s your lanolin to alcohol ratio and how much are you putting on the brass? I go heavy on the lube for 5.7 and tumble in corn cob for 15min after sizing to remove the lanolin before loading.

I like to bathe cases in 50% Simple Green for 10 minutes, lightly agitate, and rinse w/ water. No media. Then Hornady One Shot, size, and repeat the procedure. Right now I go w/ Hornady dies.

OOOhhhhhhh 5% you need to use 5% Simple green. 50% will eat the coating off and at a min comprise the coating.
